Assessment and Examination

To complete the training program you must make satisfactory progress over its duration and undertake a final examination regardless of whether you are seeking an ACRRM or RACGP Fellowship.

The progress is monitored through the following informal processes.

  • Regular formative assessments by practice supervisors and managers
  • Registrar participation in workshop activities
  • Registrar learning plans and self-reflection
  • Training advisor visits

Formal assessment differs between the ACRRM and RACGP Fellowship programs.

i.  ACRRM

ACRRM has a much more structured assessment program, with formal assessment points being undertaken at intervals over the program:

  • Clinical Skills log book - progressively completed.
  • Summative Multi-source Feedback (MSF) - any time after 24 months of completed training.
  • Summative Mini Clinical Evaluation Exercise (MiniCEX) - anytime after 24 months of completed training.
  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) - any time after 12 months completed training.
  • Structured Assessment Using Multiple Patient Scenarios (StAMPS) - after all the above has been completed.

ACRRM has provided a number of documents to explain its program further (all in pdf):

ii. RACGP

Applicants for the RACGP Fellowship are required to sit a three-part end-of-training examination.  All three parts must be passed:

  • A three-hour examination completing multiple choice questions (MCQs)
  • A three and a half hour examination completing extended match questions (Key Feature Problems)
  • A full day OSCE type examination covering 14 patient scenarios.

The RACGP also offers a post-FRACGP Fellowship in Advanced Rural General Practice or FARGP (pdf document).

The RTP is also required to certify that you have made satisfactory progress and have attended the required amount of registrar workshops over the duration of the program.
