Required Hospital Disciplines

In order to meet the requirements of the Training Program, GP Registrars must have undertaken the rotations specified below, either during their internship or subsequent hospital experience or as part of the hospital terms in the Training Program. This training may be undertaken at any accredited hospital training posts in Australia.

Mandatory hospital rotations:

  • Paediatrics
  • General Medicine
  • General Surgery
  • Emergency Medicine

Highly recommended hospital rotations:

  • Psychiatry
  • Geriatrics
  • Women's Health/Obstetrics/Gynaecology

Other positions which may be approved:

  • Anaesthetics
  • Dermatology
  • Emergency Medicine
  • ENT
  • Urology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Orthopaedics
  • Rehabilitation

It is recommended that GP Registrars undertake a broad range of hospital training to prepare themselves for General Practice.

Note: All Registrars must undertake an RACGP accredited hospital based child and adolescent health experience that includes a high proportion of paediatric emergency attendances with appropriate supervision from paediatricians, and/or appropriately experienced General Practitioners and/or emergency physicians.

The experience must include a significant focus on the recognition, diagnosis and management of the seriously ill child. It is mandatory that Registrars gain this experience prior to entering their first accredited basic GP term unless otherwise approved by the GGT GPET Medical Educators.
