Coonawarra
Located 381 km from Adelaide, Coonawarra is one of Australia's most famous grape growing and wine producing areas. Although no one is exactly sure, the town's name seems to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning 'wild honeysuckle'. Along the road from Coonawarra to Penola (a distance of only 7 km) there are over 20 wineries.
The hidden geological treasure of porous limestone under the rich terra rossa soil creates the ideal cellar by storing water for later use. From these gifts of the earth the winemakers create their distinctive signatures in wine. Weather, soil and biological influences all affect grape quality. Coonawarra is blessed with a confluence of soil, climate, underground water and highly skilled viticulturists who enhance what nature has provided.
The combined efforts of many outstanding grape growers and talented winemakers have ensured that Coonawarra has produced wines of a truly unique style and quality. These wines are now generally recognised as Australia's best, and amongst the finest in the world.
