South-Western Victoria

With its fertile soils and reliable rainfall, the south-western Victoria is one of Australia's most productive agricultural regions.

SGPT's western region covers the breathtaking coastline of the Great Ocean Road, the Otways rainforest and the volcanic remnants around Colac, Camperdown, Terang and Hamilton through to the coastal city of Warrnambool. It takes in the edge of the magnificent Grampians and extends down through Portland to the tip of the limestone coast and on through to Mount Gambier and the Coonawarra region of South Australia.

The area is one of great beauty. It lends itself to popular pastimes such as surfing, sightseeing, hiking and bike riding, and boasts many wineries in Victoria and in South Australia's famous Coonawarra region. The fastest growing form of agricultural production in the region is viticulture, which has produced an excellent reputation for fine wines for both the domestic and international markets.

The economic base is provided through agriculture and tourism as well as some value-adding manufacturing. Producing just over one quarter of the total agricultural production of the States of Victoria and South Australia, the region predominantly produces dairy products and wool.

The climatic conditions are relatively mild due to the proximity to the southern coast. It's conveniently close to Melbourne, yet far enough away to provide a healthy, relaxed, enjoyable lifestyle.
