Tower Hill
Tower Hill State Game Reserve, nestled inside an extinct volcano, is today a haven for wildlife. Koalas, emus, kangaroos and many species of waterbirds roam freely throughout the reserve, often within clear view.
Located only 15 kilometres west of Warrnambool on the Princes Highway on the way to Port Fairy, Tower Hill is popular among people of all ages for picnics, bushwalking and wildlife watching. There is a boardwalk and birdhide, and the Worn Gundidj Visitor Centre for information about the area's indigenous history and cultural importance.
Tower Hill is believed to have been formed some 25,000 years ago in a violent volcanic eruption. The force of the blast created the funnel shaped crater, later filled by a lake, and the islands. Tower Hill had been revegetated and restored in recent years, helped by careful study of an 1855 oil painting by Eugene von Guerard. The painting can be seen in the Warrnambool Art Gallery.
