Population, climate & industry
Home to 31,000 people, Warrnambool is the largest city in the Greater Green Triangle region. Located 260 kilometres south-west of Melbourne, Warrnambool is an ideal base from which to explore the region. Warrnambool has a moderate climate; its average summer temperature 22C, in winter 14C. Annual rainfall averages 690mm.

Surrounded by farmlands, Warrnambool naturally has a large investment in dairying, food production, livestock and meat processing. As the regional capital, tourism, retail, manufacturing, professional services, health services and education are also significant parts of Warrnambool's industry base. Warrnambool has two major retail precincts - the central business district and a growing area on the city's eastern fringe - and an industrial estate. These contain a mixture of locally owned businesses and national chains. For health care, Warrnambool has major public and private hospitals and a variety of medical specialists.

Education
Warrnambool has many educational facilities, making it ideal for young families. There are nine preschools, eleven primary schools and four secondary schools. These include both public and religious educational facilities. There are also campuses of Deakin University and South West College of TAFE, which bring a large youth population to the city. Adult education is also boosted by SEAL (Self-Education & Adult Learning), which runs a variety of short courses open to everyone.

Transport
There are several options for transport to and from Warrnambool. By road, Warrnambool is bisected by the Princes Highway (Hwy 1; known as Raglan Parade within the city), linking it to Melbourne and Adelaide. Warrnambool connects to the Hamilton Highway (B140) from Geelong to Hamilton via the Hopkins Highway (B120) from Warrnambool to Mortlake. Other nearby highways include the Henty Highway (B200) connecting to the north from Portland. There is a V-Line rail service to and from Melbourne three times a day. There is also a comprehensive bus service within the city and regular coach trips outside the city as well.

Entertainment & communication
For entertainment, Warrnambool has a multiplex cinema, a variety of restaurants, cafes, clubs and pubs, and regular performances by local and visiting artists at the Warrnambool Entertainment Centre theatre. There is also a selection of galleries and museums, as well as natural attractions such as the beach. The new beachside boardwalk is a popular spot for walking, cycling, jogging or just picnicking, as is the Lake Pertobe Adventure Playground. Warrnambool has dance, music, art and drama groups and clubs for all major sports. There are several gyms and sporting venues, including the new Aquazone complex. It hosts a variety of large sporting events, such as the Melbourne to Warrnambool cycling race each October, the Half Marathon in August and the May Racing Carnival. Other annual attractions in the city include the Fun4Kids Festival in the winter school holidays, the Wunta Fiesta in February, a seaside carnival in summer and the Warrnambool Show in October/November.

Media
Free-to-air television shows the three commercial television news channels as well as ABC and SBS; there is also pay television reception available. Warrnambool is also served by a daily newspaper, The Standard, a Fairfax publication. Warrnambool receives four ABC radio stations (Classic FM, 92.1 FM; Triple J, 89.7 FM; Radio National, 101.7 FM; and ABC Local Radio, 1602 AM). There are also two Warrnambool-based commercial stations (3YB, 882 AM; and Coast FM, 101.3 FM), and several community stations (Vision Christion radio, 100.9 FM; 3WAY, 103.7 FM; and 3RPH, 94.5 FM). Stations from other locations may also be received.
